Using Drones to Tackle Deforestation

Sarah Inge, Greg Armfield

In 2019 the world witnessed devastating fires, driven by deforestation, lay waste to huge swathes of the Amazon, taking it ever closer to a “tipping-point.” WWF estimates that more than a quarter of the Amazon will be lost by 2030 if the current rate of deforestation continues.

Harnessing the knowledge and recognising the rights of indigeous communities is crucial to protecting it. This is why WWF is equipping indigenous people with drone technology to detect deforestation encroaching on their land, and as the dry season approaches, equipment and training to fight fires.
